It should be noted that ESORT through DVA was responsible for the inclusion of Defence veterans and serving personnel in the ABS census and as can be seen, we are not an inconsequential segment of the national and state electorates. A major purpose was to see where we had major concentrations and clusters so that the newly accepted Veterans Hubs could be located in the right areas. A very positive move and hopefully encourage our politicians to take a bit more notice.
Comment – Food for Thought
The percentage of the population who have had military service is 2.8% (581,100). To determine our veteran’s potential voting influence on Governments’ Defence and Veterans policies one needs to consider the multiplier effects (x ?) of their immediate family (mother, father, brothers, sisters, spouse, children over aged 18 etc) and their wider family (grandparents of the veteran and spouse, their uncles, aunts etc). Assuming multipliers of say 5 and 10 respectively then the veterans family influence size rises from the base of 581,100 veterans to 2,900,000 (immediate family) and to 5,800,000 (wider family).
ADSO’s role to protect the wellbeing and service entitlements of our veterans is undoubtedly a like commitment from the veterans own family members.
