ANZAC PORTAL BRINGS WARTIME HISTORY TO LIFE

DVA

Three Second World War veterans joined students from Canberra’s Melba Copland College at Parliament House today to share stories about wartime experiences during the launch of the Anzac Portal.

Personal stories, historical information and educational resources have been masterfully brought together within a new website commemorating not just the Centenary of Anzac, but the Century of Service that it spawned.

The Anzac Portal: Education and Community Awareness for the Anzac Centenary 2014-2018 is a free, dedicated resource for all Australians, not only students and teachers, wishing to learn more about Australia’s experience of war.

The Anzac Portal shares the experiences of everyday Australians who have served our nation during times of war. Excerpts from personal interviews combine with images from the Australian War Memorial’s collection and the personal collections of veterans to tell their stories. More material will be added throughout the First World War centenary period.

The Anzac Portal supports student learning about Australia’s involvement in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations through an extensive range of education resources developed by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) for teachers and students.

To further aid in the teaching of Australia’s wartime history, the Anzac Portal also houses curriculum units written by teachers that have been specially selected by theHistory Teachers’ Association of Australia to be shared amongst teachers online.

One of the Government’s key objectives for the Anzac Centenary period is to ensure that all Australians are able to gain a better understanding and appreciation of our wartime history. It is important that the effect war has had on individuals, families, towns, cities, and our nation as a whole, is remembered and that their sacrifices are never forgotten.

The Anzac Portal will also contain an extensive listing of community events and international commemorations that will be taking place this year and through to 2018, along with a list of resources that will assist those who are planning to conduct their own commemorative activities during the Anzac Centenary.

I encourage all Australians to visit the Anzac Portal at www.anzacportal.dva.gov.au and share the stories and experiences of those who have served our nation.
