George Mansford’s Opinion – The AWM’s Intent is in haste and needs an Urgent rethink

If the proposed introduction to the AWM to recognise and include indigenous warriors involved in warfare with settlers succeeds, it will run the risk of dire consequences. Particularly in providing more opportunity for radical groups seeking further change and dilution of our national unity.

As an aside I am often reminded of so many who on Active and General Service are accidentally killed. Where are their names to be seen? Perhaps there is a Pandora’s Box just begging to be opened unless common sense prevails.

The proposal to introduce such radical change in the AWM  could well dampen pride, enthusiasm and fracture long term national community support..

The brightness of AWM’s beacon reaching out with a clear message of national pride and unity for all generations yet to be born, is fed by each generation’s enthusiasm and reverence for the past. (SOLAR PANELS WILL NOT DO THE JOB)

If there is to be enhancement of our AWM then let it be a weapon to reinforce unity and good will and appropriate recognition of those who in times of war never wavered in duty.

One of the richest veins to be discovered in such development was the growing awareness of the origins, characteristics and potential value of the original inhabitants as soldiers who served.

Why not a theme in the AWM which embraces our Armed Forces from Federation to the Space Age and beyond where national unity, character and deeds are strengthened by depicting soldiers of varying race and religion? Some of the most moving photographs I have seen are of WW 1 diggers of the 51st Battalion, indigenous to white, preparing for battle. (Surely a clear message for all Australians).  So many examples are direct links in the chain of military service to our nation, including today’s soldiers, regardless of gender, race and colour, still serving side by side in numerous areas of our Far North, WA and the NT.

That is only part of the new room for our heroes. It should include other stories and photos of those from all Continents, who as Australians served in all conflicts from WW1 to this very day.

Thus Reg Saunders, Johnny Russell, Charlie Menes, Charlie Anderson, Jacky Walsh, who are linked to ancient times of our beloved land are shoulder to shoulder with a seemingly endless list of those who were born in other places as indicated by their terrible accents who chose Australia as their home. Von Kurtz, Parrello, Alcorta, Imacks, Geedricks, All together in this new room for heroes. It would be a powerful proud room where even the youngest of our visiting school children could readily capture the clear message that “We are indeed all as one.”

There on the walls, void of bickering, discontent, racism, power grabbing disunity and political correctness are the images and stories of some who in time helped create maturity and world recognition of our nation with one single purpose; and confirmed by a familiar shout of “all for one and one for all.”

As for all the other unfortunate tragic episodes of questionable, shameful conduct, let the courts and appropriate authorities decide, separate and far distanced from one of our most cherished and priceless assets. The Australian War Memorial.

Our AWM is a treasured place, no matter how many days travel we are from it; no matter if we are yet to visit. Jt belongs to you and me. It is our Shrine regardless of politics, religion or race. Always to be revered, honoured and protected. A shrine cloaked with the spirit of ANZAC.
