Opinion: Australia ignores lessons from WWII

The past may be a different country, but has well trodden paths and byways. In 1938 politically peripatetic Winston Churchill seemed a lone voice against British PM Neville Chamberlain’s attempted appeasement with Hitler.

Churchill warned against the Axis powers who were, he argued, rearming in contravention of the Treaty of Versailles post World War I. He believed this was clearly preparation for war and warned Britain and its allies must also prepare for war.

The present is also a different country though it would be hard not to imagine Churchill and those others who warned of potential conflict would be dismayed at Australia’s current preparation and lack of war-fighting capability.
