This Part provides for printed materials produced by authors on behalf of the Regiment itself, or its battalions and sub-units, or other formal military records such as staffing lists that include RAR members eg officer graduation lists. Considerably more local productions are likely to be located by contacting each battalion regimental historian. In recent years, the digital age has also led to many materials now being “published” on-line by and about the RAR battalions and their associations; see Part 11 in particular.

This a complete history of the RAR, which has been the mainstay of the Australian Regular Army since WW II. With the formation of the regular army, including the RAR, for the first time Australia had a permanent professional army, available in peacetime and in war for any task the government might direct. The RAR is the key fighting force of the army and has carried the main burden of active service since its inception in late 1945 when three battalions were formed to serve with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan. Active service began with a ‘baptism of fire’ in the Korean War. Elements of the RAR has taken part in almost every deployment since.

Australian Army History Unit took over the management of this book, and this is the fifth edition/update since Edition 1 in 1987. It contains six Parts, including a new revisionist segment titled European settlement and the Aboriginal resistance 1788-1920. Many observers note the inclusion of the latter date is deliberate so that the ‘Native Wars’ as they are sometimes referred to can be included as part of the narrative. The Australian Army, or pre-federation colonial military forces, were NOT deployed to fight Aboriginals. This struggle within the military history community continues. Of less contention is the updated segments in Parts 5 and 6, including non-operational deployments in favour of civil communities. NO mention is made of deployments to the Communist Insurgency in Malaysia 1968-1989, another debate which rages and as at 2024, has been confirmed officially as ‘not peacetime’ operational service.

In 1968 3RAR was based in Phuoc Tuy Province but also operated outside their area of operations as the need dictated.The unit fought in the Tet Offensive in early 1968 and later operated in the Long Hai hills where it sustained many casualties as a result of mines. First published in 1968, this important history of 5 RAR’s first tour of Vietnam and the early days of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War is still used as a teaching text in many military and tertiary institutions in the study of counter insurgency operations. This updated and digitised version was published on 18 Nov 22 and can be read on-line for free at http://doi.org/10.22459/VT.2022 . Hard copies also available; printing will occur on demand able to be ordered direct on the ANU Press website. Whilst many readers still have a copy of the original edition of ‘Vietnam Task’, this new edition is now a companion volume to ‘Vietnam Vanguard’ published in 2020. Its key attraction is the inclusion of a new appendix which is a nominal role of all who served with the battalion on the first tour of Vietnam. Also, most photographs have been enhanced by obtaining high resolution copies from the AWM. In addition, two new colour maps have been created that could not be adequately scanned from the old edition. Completion of this project means that the history of the first tour of Vietnam is now forever available. Vietnam Task is still used as a teaching text in many military and tertiary institutions in the study of counter-insurgency doctrine.

MRTF-2 included two Operational Mentoring and Liaison Teams (OMLTs) whose mission was to assist in the development of the 4th Brigade of the Afghan National Army.
